Focus on modernisation of traditional sectors: Minister

Buyer-seller meet opened at Coir Kerala expo

Industries Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty has said that the government aimed at modernisation and mechanisation to strengthen the traditional sectors, including coir, in the State.

Inaugurating the buyer-seller meet held at Coir Kerala 2015 here on Tuesday, Mr. Kunhalikutty was of the view that annual expo was a unique event that bolstered the coir industry which was a source of livelihood for many thousands of people. “Over the past few years, the interactions at the session have resulted in the growth of the coir sector. Being a sector that supports a large number of small and medium enterprises, the meet will help them in reaching out to global markets,” he said.

According to him, the government provided thrust for the progress of traditional sectors in its efforts. The adoption of latest technology, including information technology and electronic advancements, was necessary in this regard, Mr. Kunhalikutty said.

Delivering the presidential address, Coir Minister Adoor Prakash said the objective of the government was to introduce new varieties of coir and natural fibre products, and create value-added products. Attempts were also made to introduce new designs that were in tune with changing customer preferences.
