After winning the contract to supply food for around 2,000 people overseeing the 35th National Games and setting up food courts at all the venues, Kudumbasree is now set to take over the canteen at the MLA hostel in the city and a hotel owned by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) at Shanghumughom.

Starting next month, members of the self-help group from across the State will take turns to run the canteen at the MLA hostel and the DTPC hotel will be managed by women from the coastal areas of the city.

Change of plan

The earlier plan was to take over the hostel canteen this month itself but the sudden decision of the National Games organisers to entrust the catering job to Kudumbasree altered it, district mission coordinator A. Sini told The Hindu .

The organisation had requested the Legislature Secretariat to open the canteen for the public at least during daytime.

Kitchens

The Kudumbasree has set up kitchens at Ambalamukku, Pirappancode, Attingal, and Vellayani to prepare food for volunteers and members of the National Games Organising Committee.

It is providing three meals a day, besides tea and snacks, for Rs.325.

“We were a bit hesitant initially as the members did not have prior experience in cooking food for a large number of people, that too for 15 days continuously. And the different venues in the city are a challenge. But we took it as a challenge as this is an opportunity to brand Kudumbasree,” Ms. Sini said.

The organisation had extended a financial assistance of around Rs.15 lakh to meet the logistical needs, including transportation and fee for the auditorium where the food is prepared.
