Ten-day Pune Biennale to begin on February 6

Pune Biennale, a grassroots movement that aims to promote and showcase creative talent, is set to kick off.

Starting February 6, the second edition of Pune Biennale, a grassroots movement that aims to promote and showcase creative talent from visual arts, architecture and photography, will kick of in the city on February 6.

Dattatreya Dhankawade, mayor, Pune, Vishwajeet Kadam, secretary, Bharati Vidyapeeth, and Rajendra Jagtap, additional municipal commissioner announced the schedule of the ten-day festival at a press conference held in the city on Tuesday.

Prof. Rajeev Lochan, director, National Gallery of Modern Art, Delhi, will inaugurate the event, which is a joint venture of Bharati Vidyapeeth and Pune Municipal Corporation, at Bal Gandharva Ranga Mandir.

Initiated by Bharati Vidyapeeth’s College of Architecture, Pune, Pune Biennale stresses on making art accessible to public in its all possible manifestations. This year the theme for Pune Biennale, which will be organised across multiple venues, is ‘Heritage: Yours and Mine’.

Pune Biennale will see as many as five major exhibitions — ‘Go Tell It On The Mountain’ at Balgandharva Kaladalan from February 6 to 14, ‘Future of Past’ (site-specific installations and sculptures from junk) at Deccan College from February 7 to 15, two events – ‘Sculpting in Time’ from February 7 to 15 and ‘Timeless Compositions’ (photography as fine art) from February 7 to 12 at Pt Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Centre on Ghole Road, besides Pune Kala- Pravah at Pt Bhimsen Joshi Kala Kaladalan in Sahakar Nagar.

“The event will see as many as participation of 200 national artistes from over 30 cities in the country, over 300 college and school students and international artists from Moscow, London and Singapore,” said Kiran Shinde, founder director, Pune Biennale.

Murals and graffiti art, a heritage photowalk titled Viewfinder, over 30 site specific installations, about 20 large-scale sculptures made from junk material, and over 10 interactive workshop and seminar sessions revolving around the theme will also be presented.

“The event aims at promoting and showcasing creative talent from various disciplines. Certain artworks have already been showcased during the pre-cursor event,” added Shinde.
