: Swami Nischalananda Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of Puri, advocated reforms in the education system as per Vedic values for protection of culture and environment for the future generation.

Addressing a function organised at a school in the city, Swami Nischalananda said it is hard to build up the character of future citizens through the present education system, which according to him has not incorporated spiritual values. He added that at present the education system of our country was being managed by the political and administrative system, which were being tacitly guided by the corporate sector.

“At present, development has become synonymous with the endangering and demeaning status of ages old values. In the name of progress, we are destroying the sanctity of our environment, while pure air and water have started to become a rarity in the so called developed urban areas,” he said.

According to him, the only way to protect the environment and humane values for the future is to adopt basic principles of Vedic education system.
