Santoor exponent Pandit Shivkumar Sharma was honoured with the Dr. Gangubai Hangal Lifetime Achievement Award on the concluding day of the Hubballi-Dharwad Sangeet Mahotsava here on Sunday.
Pt. Sharma described it as the “greatest moment in his life” as the award was instituted in the memory of Gangubai Hangal, the doyenne of Hindustani music.
Hubballi- based Kala Dharohoar has instituted the award and Pt. Sharma is its first recipient. Pt. Sharma said he felt emotional after visiting Hubballi where Gangubai Hangal lived and gave a spiritual touch to music.
Co-founder of Deshpande Foundation Jayashree Deshpande, and Gangubai’s sons Narayanrao and Baburao Hangal felicitated the musician after conferring the award on him.
A mesmerising performance by Pt. Sharma marked the conclusion of the three-day music fest.
Earlier, local boy Aditya Joshi surprised the audience with his mastery over the flute. The Class 3 student presented Raag Hamsadhwani and Mishra Pahadi with élan. Violinist from Mumbai Kala Ramanath and vocalist Ustad Rashid Khan also enthralled the audience.
