Jail inmate hangs himself, inquiry marked

After the incident, the jail authorities marked a judicial inquiry into the case.

According to available information, the victim went to the bathroom of barrack number 7 around 2 pm and hanged himself from the window grill with his turban. Other inmates saw the body and informed the jail staff.

The jail staff sent the body to the Civil Hospital and informed the family of the deceased.

Deputy Superintendent at Central Jail Kamaljeet Cheema said the victim was lodged in jail January last year after he was booked for dowry death of his wife.

The court awarded sentence to the victim on January 15 this year, and he had been in depression since.

A post-mortem on the body will be conducted in the presence of judicial magistrate on Tuesday.
