THANE: Thane athletes Mangesh Arshekar and Mayuri Sutar-both students of Swami Vivekanand English Medium School (SVEMS) ruled the roost at 3.5km Sunday’s 13th inter-school Mukand Mini-marathon organised by Mukand Sports Club, for school students of Navi Mumbai and Thane held along Thane Belapur road. Mangesh and Mayuri topped the podium in boy’s and girl’s groups respectively.
Over 1, 500 children streamed into the streets to prove their athleticism in the under-15 age group.
SVEMS students stole the show in the boy’s group giving top fight to their contemporaries, by winning all three top prizes. Similarly, in the girl’s section, SVEMS took home top two places and leaving the third prize to Holy Cross School.
Mangesh got the better of his school mate Vishal Ugale in a closely fought race to win the title in less than a second elapsed timing. Mangesh clocked 10 minutes and 36 seconds to complete the 3.5km course while his close contender Vishal finished the race in 10 minutes and 37 seconds. The third prize went to Yash Shivalkar of SVEMS who clocked 10 minutes 37 seconds and 1 microsecond. “The competition was very tough as most of the contestants came very close to each other at the finishing line,” said Mangesh.
In the girl’s segment, Mayuri topped the list with an elapsed time of 13 minute and 25 seconds and she was chased by her school mate Harshita Kanojia who finished at 13 minutes and 26 seconds. Derailing the monopoly of SVEMS athletes, Holy Cross student Aditi Chalke consolidated her position to win the third prize by clocking 13 minute and 30 seconds.
