‘PM must clear air on Preamble row’

January 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:50 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Taking strong exception to some BJP leaders’ call to drop the words ‘Secular’ and ‘Socialist’ from the Preamble of the Constitution, experts in various fields demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi clear the row.

At a programme organised by the Atheist Centre here on Friday, K. Ramamohan Rao, senior advocate, wanted the Prime Minister to make a statement on the government’s intentions. “The idea to drop the words ‘secular’ and ‘socialist’ from the Preamble has no logic and needs to be condemned. Such plans should be withdrawn immediately,” he said.

Veteran journalist C. Raghavachary said the basic structure of the Constitution should not be changed.

“Parliament cannot change the Fundamental Rights, and, if need be, more rights have to be added, while the existing rights should remain. Efforts should be made to promote scientific temper among the Next Generation,” he said. “It is not just for the progress of science. It will also change the mindset of the people and support social empowerment,” Mr. Raghavachary added.
