8 of 9 detained at KIA released

Bengaluru police have released eight of the nine persons they detained on Saturday night when they landed at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) from Turkey as they could not elicit any credible information on the purpose of their visit to Turkey.

The only one still being questioned is Javeed Baba, a native of Telangana.

According to police, the nine were deported by Turkish authorities when they tried to cross the border to reach Syria. It is suspected that they wanted to join the terror outfit Islamic State which controls parts of Syria.

No FIR registered

Additional commissioner of police (law and order) Alok Kumar said, “We are still questioning one person. Nothing can be revealed at this stage.” Besides Bengaluru cops, central agencies also questioned the group. Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Abhishek Goyal said, “We have released eight of them as there is no FIR registered against them. Javeed is still being questioned as his parents are yet to arrive in the city.” Sources said, police are examining some videos found on the electronic gadgets used by the group’s members. A police officer said, “We did not get any satisfactory answers from the detained persons. To all our questions, they had very diplomatic answers. They claimed to be heading to Syria to do social work for a community.”

Police are still clueless about how the group members got to know each other, the circumstances of the group’s visit to Turkey, whom they met there, and their motive behind travelling to Syria by crossing Turkey. The detained included Muhammed Abdul Ahad, 46, his wife and five children, all natives of Chennai; Javeed Baba, 24, native of Khammam district, Telangana, and Ibrahim Nowfal, 24, a native of Hassan.

The group flew from Bengaluru to Istanbul on a tourist visa on December 24. They were caught by Turkish authorities while trying to cross the border into Syria and sent back to India on January 30.
