BHU suspends professor accused of molesting student

Lanka police Station Officer Ramesh Yadav said an FIR under section of 354-A (physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures) of the IPC has been registered against Singh after the girl filed a complaint with the police last Friday.

He added the girl has also alleged that BHU was not taking cognizance of the complaint she had submitted to the university’s women grievance cell on January 27 itself. “The police could not take the statement of the accused because he got admitted in the hospital on Thursday — a day after the girl filed a complaint with the university authorities. The professor was admitted to BHU’s hospital and doctors have reported some complication in his heart,” said Yadav.

“The girl, in her complaint, has alleged that Professor Singh called her to his chamber on January 27 and made physical advances towards her,” he added.

When contacted, Singh claimed he has been framed. “That girl is my student and I do not know why she is telling lies and making baseless allegations against me,” Singh told The Indian Express over phone.

Singh teaches Operations Management in the Faculty of Management Studies of BHU. He claimed that he was suffering from heart blockage and was undergoing treatment and thus, could not speak more on the issue.

BHU Spokesperson Rajesh Singh said: “The university has taken timely and due action on the student’s complaint by suspending the accused professor…. The women grievance cell has been directed probe the matter.”
