The alignment of Ghatkopar-Ghansoli-Kopar Khairane Creek bridge has been changed and as per the latest revision, it will start close to Kannamwar Nagar on the Eastern Express Highway.

"The earlier plan was erect the bridge over Kanjurmarg dumping ground by constructing pillars within its plot. But the BMC has requested us to revise the plans, which we have agreed to," said UPS Madan, Metropolitan Commissioner of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

As per the revision, the pillars of the creek bridge will now be outside the boundary walls of Kanjurmarg dumping ground, that is, on the southern end of it or near Kannamwar Nagar.

The plan is to construct the bridge of 6.50 kms with a 2.23 kms section running over Thane creek. The estimated price of the project is Rs 550 crore.

On the eastern and north-eastern coast of Mumbai, presently there are two creek bridges - Vashi and Airoli. A manifold increase in vehicles and more development in Navi Mumbai has led to severe road congestion at the entry-exit points of Mumbai. Now the areas of Ghansoli, Dronagiri, Ulwe, Taloja, etc are where developers are creating housing stock at a relatively lower prices to areas like Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, etc. With population likely to increase substantially, there was a need to add another such bridge.

For the last few years, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has been planning to construct a creek bridge connecting Vashi, but is unable to do so for lack of funds. The MMRDA and City and Industrial Development Corporation were willing to share the expenditure for the construction with a condition that part of the revenue from toll will have to be shared with them, which MSRDC refused.

Moreover, MMRDA was also aggressively looking for implementation of Mumbai Trans Harbour Link connecting Nhava with Sewri.

However, the date of construction and completion schedule for Ghatkopar-Ghansoli-Kopar Khairane bridge has not been prepared as it is in the initial stages of planning. The development authority is likely to earmark more funds in their financial budget for the year 2015-2016 for planning and implementation of creek bridges in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
