Former Union Minister M.K. Alagiri celebrated his 64th birthday here on Friday. He cut a cake at his residence and proceeded to Raja Muthiah Mandram in a procession. Amid bursting of crackers and milk pot procession by women, supporters of Mr. Alagiri greeted him along the route.
The supporters brought in decorated elephants to garland him. The procession, which started at 9.30 a.m., reached Rajah Muthiah Mandram at 12.30 p.m. Though Mr. Alagiri had been expelled from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, many party cadres greeted him en route by presenting shawls in at least 50 locations. Considered a strongman in the DMK in southern districts, Mr. Alagiri was accompanied by former MLA S. S. Ghouse Batcha, former Deputy Mayor P.M. Mannan and many councillors of Madurai Corporation. DMK Rajya Sabha MP K.P. Ramalingam and former Minister Mullaivendan also greeted Mr. Alagiri.
The family members, led by Mr. Alagiri’s son Daya Alagiri, organised a feast for the poor in many locations.
