World championship bronze medallist in badminton P.V. Sindhu was felicitated at Funtimes Club here on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, city East MLA Gadde Rammohan said it was a significant moment for State sports fraternity as a 19-year-old girl was conferred Padma Shri award. “While many eagerly wait for the honour from the Central government, Sindhu bagging it early in her career is heartening news. This will do a whale of good to her morale,” he said.
He said the sport was in the DNA of World No. 10 Sindhu as both her father and mother were popular volleyball players. “In fact, Sindhu’s father P.V. Ramana represented the country in volleyball and he is also a Padma Shri awardee”.
Municipal Commissioner G. Veerapandian said Sindhu was emerging as a brand and she will enhance the prestige of the State in the days to come. Air Costa managing director L. Rajasekhar, Badminton Association of India joint secretary Ankamma Chowdary, club president Y. Ajith Kumar, senior member V. Sambasiva Rao and others took part in the meeting.
