The Department of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) is now conducting a study to see whether teaching yoga to primary school students has helped their learning.
Speaking to The Hindu on the sidelines of a workshop on ‘yoga therapy for stress disorders’ at Mangalore University on Friday, Vijayakumar Gogi, Director, AYUSH Department, said that the department was teaching yoga to physical education teachers of primary schools in phases for the past three years. So far, teachers in about 100 taluks have been covered and they were teaching yoga to their students.
The department has prepared a format to know whether this has increased their learning abilities and ability to concentrate. The format was being circulated to schools where yoga is taught. It was important to find out the impact of yoga.
The director said a proposal to open a university for AYUSH was being discussed. The government had identified a 100-acre land for the purpose near Shivamogga. The proposal has not taken the final shape. An ayurveda hospital has been opened in Shivamogga and an ayurveda college building was coming up in the Malnad town.
