Coimbatore Vizha from January 30

For 10 days, from January 30, over 80 voluntary, residential and industrial associations and institutions here will join hands to celebrate Coimbatore Vizha, an annual event presented by Coimbatore chapter of Young Indians (Yi).

The seventh edition of the event will have programmes under as many as eight categories – art, culture, entrepreneurship, environment, heritage, social, awareness campaigns, etc. According to D. Purushothaman, chair of Yi-Coimbatore, in an effort to reach out to more people, a three-day programme is planned at VOC grounds this year, from February 6.

Food show, musical and dance programmes, display of hot air balloons, vintage car rally, stunt show and traditional games will be held at VOC grounds. A pavilion of some of the leading brands of the city will also be put up that will explain the past, present and future of sectors such as jewellery, textiles, education, and healthcare. A painting expo – Ovia Sandhai – will be held on February 8 in which about 100 artists are expected to exhibit their works. P.B. Balaji, convenor for Coimbatore Vizha, said the programmes are expected to attract three lakh people, including 30,000 visitors for the events at the VOC Grounds.

While about 30 per cent of the programmes were organised in the previous editions of Coimbatore Vizha, 70 per cent are new. A massive cleaning campaign (Garbage Free Coimbatore) will be held on January 31 and about 1000 volunteers from 15 organisations are expected to participate. A cyclothon would be organised on February 1 and it would cover the major heritage sites of the city.

The organisers have also launched a mobile application for android and iOS phones and using these, those interested can even find the way to the venue for the event that they want to attend. Details of the programmes are available on: www.coimbatorevizha.com
