Tension between Congress leaders resurfaces in Uttarakhand

Bahuguna threatens to hold rally against his own party

January 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 09:53 am IST - Dehradun:

In a letter that reveals the tension between former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna and Chief Minister Harish Rawat, Mr. Bahuguna has warned Mr. Rawat that he would hold a rally against their own party — the Congress — if the issues over land regularisation were left unaddressed by the State government.

In the letter addressed to Mr. Rawat, Mr. Bahuguna stated that the issue of land regularisation of category IV and category 1 (A) were pending with the State government for over a year.

“The issue of land regularisation is pending with the current government even though a decision on it was taken during my tenure,” Mr. Bahuguna said.

Mr. Bahuguna said that if the State Cabinet cleared the proposed amendments to the sections of the Zamindari Abolition and Land Reforms (ZALR) Act, it would benefit leaseholders in the Terai region, especially in Sitarganj (Mr. Bahuguna’s constituency) and Shaktifarm areas in Udham Singh Nagar district.

If the State Cabinet did not resolve the issue soon he would hold a protest rally — ‘Janakrosh rally’ — in Udham Singh Nagar, Mr. Bahuguna warned.

When asked for a response, Mr. Rawat, on Friday said, “I had formed a sub-committee to study the issue. The report of the committee is out and it will soon be presented in the State Cabinet.”
