Brinda slams police inaction after disabled girl's gang-rape
CHENNAI: CPM leader Brinda Karat MP on Friday criticised the Tamil Nadu police for their initial reluctance to conduct a probe into the alleged gang-rape of a disabled minor girl in Krishnagiri district on December 25.
Brinda met the state DGP Ashok Kumar and submitted a petition seeking immediate action against the culprits. She demanded legal action against the police personnel who refused to probe the case.
Speaking to reporters after her meeting with the DGP, she said, "I was told that the gang-rape victim had been lying unattended at the hospital, wearing the same tainted clothes, for five days before she was taken for the medical examination. At that time, the crucial evidence was lost and the police failed to register the case under the 5 (G) of POCSO ACT."
"I strongly believe that the DGP was misled by the police personnel in Krishnagiri. The police personnel who failed to discharge their duty can be booked under Section 166 of the IPC. I have insisted the police top brass to take proper action against the errant police personnel," Karat said.
After the matter was taken up by the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) state secretary S Valentina, the police registered a case of outraging the modesty of women and arrested the culprits. under Section 354 of the IPC and arrested V Muthappa, 26, of Kochaiyur village, his friends B Mathappa, 22, M Rudrappa, 22, and B Sithalinga, 23, in connection with the case.
