Birbhum ‘ghar wapsi’: Cops question 5 VHP leaders

With Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sending a stern message to those allegedly indulging in religious conversion in the state, the police on Friday issued a notice to five VHP functionaries who had organised a ‘ghar wapsi’ programme at a Birbhum village two days ago.

The five VHP leaders were on Friday interrogated at the Rampurhat police station, police sources said. Among these five, there are two tribal leaders of the organisation. These leaders are residents of tribal villages in and around Kurmadanga where the ‘ghar wapsi’ programme was organised.

On Thursday, based on the complaints by two tribal youths, two cases were lodged against VHP international working president Praveen Togadia and VHP general secretary Jugal Kishore for allegedly delivering hate speeches. While Togadia was not present at the spot when th‘ ‘reconversion’ took place, Kishore was had addressed villagers there.

When contacted, Amiya Sarkar, VHP president in the district, said: “We are yet to get the copies of the FIRs. However, the police today summoned some of our leaders and examined them. But the police could not trace the complainant. We are not sure if the complaint is a real or has been motivated by the ruling party.”
