Tata Nexon Codenamed as ‘X104’: New Details Surface

Tata Motors showcased their Nexon concept at the Auto Expo last year, which previewed how the Pune based Auto Major is envisaging its version of a compact SUV and what we saw looked real interesting.

A new report at Autocar claims that the production version of Nexon has been codenamed as X104 and will carry over a lot of design cues from Evoque! The Range Rover is a compact luxury SUV by Land Rover and is possibly the most eye-catching thing on the roads! Tata’s entry to the compact SUV segment is a part of their Horizonext strategy, which will help them boost their presence in the Indian car market.

The compact SUV segment is one of the fastest growing segments in the country and the X104 will be facing strong competition from the highly successful Ford EcoSport and Mahindra’s upcoming S101 and others. The concept model did manage to score a lot of brownie points in terms of design but Tata has always been known to showcase beautiful looking concept models at various auto shows, only to forget all of them in sometime.

The report further goes on to call the Nexon a ‘mini-Evoque’ and shares that it is based on the same modified Vista platform (X1) as the Zest and the Bolt. X104, however will get bigger 17 inch wheels.

Tata Nexon X104 Engines

Let’s talk engines then…

While the petrol can be expected to be a modified version of the 1.2 Liter Revotron engine seen first on the Zest and the Bolt, the diesel will be an all-new 1.5 Liter mill, possibly developed in house. Interestingly, as per Autocar, the three pot petrol engine will have an output of 75 bhp but this seems highly unlikely to us!

When Tata can provide the Bolt hatchback with a 90 PS petrol mill, they will definitely offer something better (or similar) on an SUV! The petrol mill on the Nexon concept, as per the specs shared by Tata during the Auto Expo, was a 1.2L Smart-Boosted mill capable of churning out an impressive 110 PS of power and 170 Nm of torque, pulling the SUV to a top whack of 180 kmph! This sub 4 meter SUV in its concept form also boasted of a fuel efficiency figure of 17.6 kmpl. It may also get a four-wheel drive variant.
