Satish century props up Vidarbha
NAGPUR: Never in their Ranji Trophy history have Vidarbha played with just one fast bowler. It happened on Thursday. The situation demanded that. The Jamtha wicket was playing tricks right from the outset. The first ball didn't even carry to Delhi wicketkeeper Rahul Yadav, which gave enough indication of things to come.
Vidarbha wanted a result-oriented wicket against Saurashtra in their last home match but got a featherbed instead.
This time they have got what they wanted. It required patience, application and skill to bat on a challenging wicket like this one. Ganesh Satish showed all of this to make batting look ridiculously easy as he helped himself to a brilliant unbeaten 119 (252b, 10x4) -his eighth First Class ton and second this season.
Vidarbha ended Day 1 of this Group 'B' tie at 274-6 after winning the crucial toss.
Delhi's spin trio -Varun Sood, Manan Sharma and Shivam Sharma -got good purchase from the wicket but struggled to put ball consistently in the right areas. Had they done that, the result would have been different. Pradeep Sangwan dismissed opener Faiz Fazal early when the southpaw was looking in good touch. Faiz tried to hit the ball through extra cover but it stopped on him and Sangwan completed a regulation return catch.
Faiz's opening partner Sachin Katariya chased a wide one and edged it straight to Unmukt Chand at second slip to become Manan's first victim. The leftarm spinner struck gold two balls later when he dismissed Vidarbha skipper S Badrinath with a beauty that turned and bounced abruptly. Suddenly Vidarbha were struggling at 46-3. Delhi spinners could have given their team the edge from here. But in-form Shalabh Shrivastava (50, 125b, 2x4) joined Satish in the middle and the duo showed everyone how to play spin on a turning track.
