Meet Elena of Avalor.

She's Disney's first Latina princess.

She's 16.

Disney Junior announced on Thursday that Princess Elena of Avalor will make her debut next year in a special episode of the Sofia the First series.

And after she has made her debut, she'll star in her own animated spin-off series, Elena of Avalor, also set to debut on Disney Junior in 2016.

What's she like?

Disney describes her in the release as " a confident and compassionate teenager in an enchanted fairy tale kingdom inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore."

Her backstory: Her parents and kingdom were taken by an evil sorceress, Shuriki. Elena bravely faced the sorceress to protect her little sister, Princess Isabel, and her grandparents. She is now the rightful heir to the throne of Avalor, but she's so young that she'll need some guidance. Her sidekicks will include Mateo, a wizard-in-training, and Skylar, a magical flying creature.

Voicing the role of Princess Elena will be Aimee Carrero (ABC Family's Young & Hungry).

As with all Disney Junior programming, the target age is kids 2 to 7, and the curriculum is designed to "communicate positive messages and life lessons that are applicable to young children about leadership, resilience, diversity, compassion and the importance of family and family traditions."

The series will be presented in 25 languages on Disney Junior channels and on Disney Channels, among other platforms, in 154 countries around the world.
