COIMBATORE: Three persons posing as policemen, snatched 91 grams of gold ornaments from a 27-year-old gold seller at Raja Street here on Thursday morning. On the pretext of checking his bag, they stole the gold and handed the bag back to him. The city police have formed a team to nab the thieves.
Police said, K Karthis, 27, from Koathapalli village in Palakkad district, Kerala, was working at Zetta Hallmark, a firm on Raja Street in Coimbatore city.
He was engaged in gold trade business. On Thursday morning, he was walking towards Vysial street from Raja street carrying a bag containing two parcels of gold ornaments.
Three persons, posing as policemen, waylaid him near Plague Mariamman Temple Street near Raja Street, and asked to check his bag for weapons. Believing them to be policemen, Karthi handed over his bag to them. The trio robbed his gold, returned the bag to him and fled.
When Karthi reached Vasavi Jewelly on Vysial Street, he opened his bag to find one gold parcel missing. The missing parcel contained 91 grams of gold while the other which had 500 grams was still there.
Karthi told police about the three people who asked to check his bag. Based on his complaint, Big Bazaar street police registered a case and further investigation is on.
Police have planned to review CCTV footage from the area where Karthis was waylaid by the trio.
On January 11, three persons posing as policemen snatched 65,000 from rice seller B Govindasamy, 59, at Range Gowder street here. A native of Anna Nagar in Thiruvannamalai, he supplied rice to various shops in Coimbatore and had come to the city to collect payments. He was carrying 65,000 in a bag.
Following the two incidents, the city police have formed two special teams to arrest the trio.
