Dalits stage dharna seeking safety, submit memorandum

Karnataka Rajya Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (Krantikari) activists staged a sit in dharna outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Thursday.

They demanded that immediate action be taken against the accused who allegedly committed offences against Dalits, minorities and other backward communities in the in the district.

Listing out the number of crimes against Dalits, minorities and other backward communities, the protesters said that accused, are allegedly involved in the murder of Mareppa Chandappa Chalawadi, a Dalit, in Pet Ammapur village in Supur taluk. The accused also raped and allegedly murdered of a Muslim girl in Tangadagi village in Shahapur taluk and are yet to be arrested, they said.

Besides, various crimes against Dalits and members of other backward communities were reported in Kachaknur, Kodekal, Narayanapur and Kamanatagi villages in Surpur taluk in the district. However, the police have not initiated action, they alleged.

Drawing the attention of the district administration, the protesters sought immediate action against the accused, asking it to ensure that Dalits, minorities and other backward communities are safe.

They submitted a memorandum, addressed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, to the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Yadgir.

Mallikarjun Kranti, district coordinator, and others were present.
