After months of suspense and keeping the concessionaire L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad (L&TMRH) on the tenterhooks, the Telangana State government has sent an official communication on the alignment changes sought at three different sites across two of the three metro corridors where construction is on.
In the official letter sent a couple of days ago, the TS government indicated that it was “contemplating” changing the alignment at the three sites – Sultan Bazar, in the old city starting from MGBS towards Falaknuma and the Legislative Assembly.
All these months and ever since the TRS government came to power, the top government functionaries have been pretty vocal about the alignment change. At the same time, L&TMRH have been sticking to the version of “no official communication” has been received seeking the alignment changes.
The first two alignment change sites fall under the much debated corridor two – between JBS and Falaknuma where the elevated metro corridor will bypass Sultan Bazar towards Tilak Park and beside Koti Women’s College and behind OMC, reducing the original distance by 0.7 km.
From MGBS instead of Darulshifa route, it will pass through Puranapul, Muslimjung, Zoo Park, Tadbun junction, Kalapathar, Misrigunj and Shamsheergunj or an extra 3.2 km than originally envisaged. Similarly, on corridor one – L.B. Nagar to Miyapur, the line will be taken behind the Assembly alongside the rail tracks and on to the main road at Telugu University rather than in front of it, reducing distance by 15 metres. It also means 21 already built piers will be sawed off.
