4 barytes-laden trucks seized by villagers

January 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - KHAMMAM:

A group of villagers of Sheripuram in Garla mandal allegedly detained four lorries on charges of illegally transporting barytes from the mineral-rich village of Thursday.

According to sources, the villagers handed over the lorries to the local police seeking stringent action against the persons behind the alleged illegal transportation of the precious mineral resources. In a related development, activists owing allegiance to the CPI, TDP and the YSRC staged a demonstration near the Nehru Centre in Garla protesting ‘mining mafia’ activities in the mandal.

They alleged that the precious mineral resources are being plundered by some greedy elements at the behest of the mining mafia. They demanded that the government curb the “mining mafia” operations. Garla CI Amrutha Reddy said the four lorries would be handed over to the Department of Mines and Geology for a detailed investigation.
