Safe drinking water will be supplied to entire Khammam town and Khammam rural mandal in one year under the first phase of Water Grid programme, said Minister for Panchayat Raj K T Rama Rao.

Mr Rao visited Palair balancing reservoir in Kusumanchi mandal and Wyra reservoir in Wyra mandal as part of a field study to finalise the modalities for the implementation of the Water Grid project in the district.

He reviewed the arrangements for grounding of the project and implementation of various welfare schemes with Collector K Ilambarithi and other officials at the Collectorate in the afternoon.

Talking to mediapersons in the evening, Mr. Rao said the Godavari and Krishna waters would be utilised at an optimum level to provide piped drinking water to every household under the Water Grid programme in four years.

Intake wells will be constructed at the sites identified at major water sources – Palair and Wyra reservoirs under the project, he said, adding that the Wyra reservoir will be filled with water from the Nagarjunasagar project (NSP) main canal to fully cater to the irrigation needs of the farmers.
