Targeting the Bharatiya Janata Party on black money , Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has money to wear a Rs. 10-lakh suit, but he cannot bring back black money, which he promised to the country .
Mr. Modi had worn a blue suit with his name embroidered on it with a golden thread during one of his meetings with U.S. President Barack Obama.
“Modiji had promised to bring back black money stashed in the Swiss Bank accounts and deposit Rs. 15 lakh from it in every Indian’s account. But he never did it; instead he made an expensive suit for him for Rs. 10 lakh to show off in front of the U.S. President,” Mr. Gandhi said at a public meeting in Northeast Delhi’s Seelampur.
“The BJP is not for the poor , it is for the rich businessmen. The Congress party has been and will be for the welfare of the poor ,” he said .
Recalling the development work that the Congress government had carried out in the Capital over the past decade and half, Mr. Gandhi said, “The Congress party is the one that gave Delhi its flyovers, bridges, extensive metro network, and many other things that Delhiites can feel proud of. If President Obama came to Delhi and praised the city, it is not because of the Modi government and its hospitality, but because of the work that our party has done here in all these years,” said Mr. Gandhi.
He also targeted Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of siding with the BJP.
“When the UPA government was in power, Mr. Kejriwal held protests on corruption and crimes against women. Now when the NDA government is in power, he is not raising even a single question. Corruption has gone up during the NDA government’s rule, but Mr. Kejriwal is silent, ” he said.
Mr. Gandhi also spoke about communal riots during the NDA government’s tenure.
“There were no communal riots during the UPA government’s rule, but when the NDA came to power, riots broke out everywhere. Delhi which had not witnessed riots for a long time saw those in Trilokpuri,” he said.
He spoke about making contract workers permanent and giving houses to the homeless and slum residents if the Congress came to power.
Senior Congress leaders Ajay Maken, Arvinder Singh, Haroon Yusuf and Mateen Ahmed were present at the rally.
