Mocking what he called Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s expensive clothing, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said Modi had failed to deliver on the promise of bringing back black money. Yet, Rahul alleged, Modi wore a suit worth Rs 10 lakh during US President Barack Obama’s visit.

“Modiji promised to bring back black money and credit Rs 15 lakh in everyone’s account. Did you get the amount? No you did not, but Modiji wore a suit worth Rs 10 lakh,” Rahul told the crowd in Northeast Delhi’s Shastri Park.

Attacking Modi for his frequent  visits abroad, Rahul said the only people benefiting from his trips are the industrialists of this country and those in the countries he visits.

“Let me tell you what he has achieved in these months (since the BJP government came to power at the Centre). The logjam over the nuclear deal has been cleared. This means that if there is any problem with a nuclear power plant in India, American companies won’t have to pay and the Indian government will have to shell out the compensation,” he said.

The Congress vice-president also raised the issue of the recent communal violence in the capital and emphasised that no such incidents took place during the 15-year Congress rule in Delhi.

Festive offer

“No communal clashes took place in Delhi during the last 15 years, but whenever there are elections in the country, there are communal clashes,” Rahul said.

Stating that Delhi’s poor have to be involved in the city’s development, he said that the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) only aim is to keep the Congress out of power by dividing the vote share. Rahul also said the BJP’s strategy is to “divide the poor and make Hindus and Muslims fight”.

Rahul also took a dig at Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and said when youth asked for employment, Modi gave them “a broom to sweep”.

The Seelampur constituency, where the rally was held, has about 58 per cent Muslim voters. It has elected Congress’s Chaudhary Mateen Ahmed as MLA since 1993.
