NOIDA: With the relief to Surender Koli, who is accused of sexually assaulting and killing as many as 16 children and three women by luring them to the house of his employer Moninder Pandher, hangman Pawan Jallad also disappointed as once again he failed to fulfill the dream of his father Mammu Jallad to hang Nithari killing accused.
Dasna jail authorities said that Koli heaved a sigh of relief on Wednesday after the Allahabad High Court commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment.

Nithari serial killer Surinder Koli, who has been sentenced to death for the brutal killing of a 14-year-old girl, supposed to be hanged in Meerut on September 12. Koli, on September 4 was transferred to the Meerut jail because of the absence of hanging facilities in the Dasna jail. Meerut jail authorities had chosen Pawan jallad to hang Surender Koli. Koli would be the first person to be hanged by Pawan Jallad.
“I am shocked to see the news of turning down the death sentence of Surender Koli. Since bigining in the case I was expecting that justice delayed, justice denied. Turning death sentence to life impresionment is an further shocker to the Nithari victims and for me as well because it was my father’s last wish to hang Nithari killing accused and terrorist Kasab,” Pawan Jallad, son of noted hangman Mammu Jallad. Mammu Jallad had died on May 19, 2011.
To fulfil the wish of his father Pawan on May 20, 2014 had reportedly applied for becoming hangman of North India. Mammu had been training his son Pawan (49) also in the business.
"My father's last wish was to hang Afzal Guru, Kasab and Nithari case convicted but he could not do that. Till his last breath he was waiting for orders to do the honours. My great grandfather Lakshman Majeera alias Kallu Jallad, a hangman during the British rule, had put to gallows Shaheed Bhagat Singh. My father always felt ashamed while talking about his lineage, but I want to reclaim my family's respect by hanging Surender Koli," Pawan Jallad added.

Pawan jallad was himself getting ready to hang Koli. Pawan jallad recently had visited Meerut jail and examined the arrangements. Notably, the last person hanged in Meerut jail was one Karam Singh. Singh, who hailed from Muzaffar Nagar was hanged in 1975 while one hanging in Meerut jail was taken place in 1951. Koli could be the 18th person, to be hanged in Meerut jail, the jail authorities said.
“We, alongwith Pawan Jallad had re-visited the place where convicted are hanged in Meerut jail. We on our part is ready to hang Koli. During the visit, we had checked the platform, lever, rope etc. We are also arranging one more rope,” Meerut jail superintendent S H M Rizvi told TOI.
Interestingly, when Mammu was alive, his children had refused to continue legacy due to low paying job. Pawan draws Rs three thousand per month salary. “In every successful family, the next generation always believes in carrying on the legacy. My father Mammu Jallad who was the state hangman for the last 47 years till he died after prolonged illness on May 19, 2011. The government did little in lieu of services provided by our family,” Pawan said.
Few days before breathing his last, Mammu, an employee of Uttar Pradesh Directorate of Prisons told that it was a matter of shame for his family that his grandfather had hanged Bhagat Singh, but "he was only doing his duty". Mammu wanted to reclaim his family's respect by hanging terrorists like Afzal and Kasab. He said it would have been a tribute from his side to those innocents who were killed in the Parliament and Mumbai attacks.
Dasna jail superintendent SP Yadav told TOI that reacting to the court verdict, Koli said that the doors of justice have opened for him and now expecting relief in other cases as well, pending against him.
“As the news flashed, I called Koli to my office and told him that his death sentence has been commuted to life imprisonment. He welcomed the decision but did not appear too happy with the decision,” Yadav said that if the same thing would have happened to other prisioner, he would have jumped with the joy and celebrate the verdict.
On further elaborating Koli’s activities thoroughout the day, Yadav said that likewise other days Koli remained normal. “We have not assigned any work to him. He most of the time is engaged with the papers related to his trial,” Yadav added.
“After announcement of death sentence, Koli in September, 2014 was shifted to Meerut jail for a few days. But when Koli had gained relief from the Allahabad High court, he was again shifted to Dasna jail in Ghaziabad, where he will continue to lodge,” said Meerut jail superintendent S H M Rizvi.
Surender Koli, a class sixth dropout, worked as a domestic help at businessman Moninder Singh Pandher’s house in Sector 31 in Noida, near Nithari village. He is accused of sexually assaulting and killing as many as 16 children and three women by luring them to the house of his employer. After raping the children, he would chop their body into pieces, stuff the parts into different bags and dispose in nearby drains.
