Taruni Sanjay, disciple of Rajeswari Sainath, presented Bharatanatyam recital at Saptaparni recently. She gave performances in Chennai for well known sabhas.
Taruni opened with Ganesha Pancharatna Stotram set to ragamalika in Adi in Tisra nada. This was followed by Tamil Varnam Kamakshi Thaaye , written by veteran dance guru K.K. Radhakrishnan in Valachi. This was in praise of Goddess Kamakshi. The jathis are composed by guru Rajeswari Sainath. The way Taruni went through the abhinaya part of the varnam while presenting jathis, spacing charanas, established her as a mature dancer. In abhinaya, the way she portrayed different characters with ease was the basic attraction of her dance for this number.
The themes narrate how compassionate Goddess Kamakshi is and how she blessed all her devotees and how Adi Sankara was praying to her with utter devotion. These thematic bits found impressive dramatistion in Taruni’s abhinaya.
Later Taruni came out with a Tamil padam — Ennadaan Maayam Irukkudadi that narrates how Krishna awaits Radha, who feels shy and hesitant to approach him. This was a composition of N.S.Sundar set in Suddha Saranga.
Taruni then presented Tillana composed by Rajkumar Bharathi in ragam Surya and in praise of Sun God. She concluded her show with Abhang Bhaktajana Vatsale in Brindavani Saranga written by Sant Namdev and was set in Eka taalam.
