Hostel warden get a mouthful from minister over substandard facility
MYSURU: District in-charge minister V Srinivas Prasad on Wednesday warned hostels, maintained by government departments, against providing substandard facilities to the inmates.
Pulling up wardens for not respecting the law, Prasad said, “The greed for money has pushed wardens to deny students facilities provided by the government. The quality of food, too, has become substandard.
This will not be tolerated.”
He was addressing wardens in the district at a meeting here.
The meeting comes days after 18 girl inmates at a government facility at Hejjage in Nanjagud were hospitalized due to food poisoning. When Prasad visited the students at Krishnarajendra Hospital, they complained about the poor quality of food served to them.
In a final warning to wardens, Prasad said, “Mend your ways or get ready to face legal action. Parents admit their children to hostels due to poor financial condition. If we don’t take care of them, why will they send their kids to study? The wardens should understand this.”
The minister announced a committee, headed by zilla panchayat president Pushpa Amarnath, to keep a tab on the hostels. It was decided to buy vegetables and fruit from Hopcoms, install CCTV cameras at hostels and introduce biometric attendance system. A nodal officer will be appointed to supervize the activities at each hostel.

Pushpa said that during a visit, she had noticed loopholes in the management of the hostels. The inmates, too, had certain complaints. “When we want to initiate penal action, the wardens get the political class to ward off the action,” she said.
Deputy commissioner C Shikha and zilla panchayat chief executive officer P A Gopal were present at the meeting.
