Major Vardarajan and Naik Neeraj posthumously awarded Ashok Chakra by the President

Kashmir Valley recently in news for two Army Personnel, Major Mukund Varadarajan and Naik Neeraj Kumar Singh, who gave up their lives fighting terrorism, has on January 26, 2015 witnessed posthumous award giving the two army men the highest peacetime military honor, the Ashok Chakra. The award was given by President Pranab Mukherjee to their wives.

At the Republic day Parade, the families, of the two soldiers who showed exemplary courage, were handed the honor by the President of India.

The 66th Republic Day celebrations, which welcomed chief guest Barack Obama, witnessed this ceremony on the day.

The two army men laid down their lives at distinct districts of the Kashmir State. The two districts were Shopian and Kupwara.

Major Varadarajan (officer in the Rajput regiment) encountered three terrorists in Shopian district of J&K in April 2014, that led to himself being badly injured in the operation.

On the other hand Gurdaj of Kupwara on August 24, 2014 witnessed Naik Neeraj coming under heavy attacks from terrorists in the area. Singh refused to be evacuated till he fell unconscious and was later evacuated. However, he succumbed to injuries.
