Dry condition has become a source of concern in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) near here, according to Deputy Director of the reserve D.Chandran. He told The Hindu here on Wednesday that though the situation was not yet serious, it warranted attention.

The management has started implementing precautionary measures, he said, adding that vigil has been stepped up in the Kargudy, Mudumalai, Theppakadu and Masinagudy ranges where water sources were showing signs of drying up.

In the Nellakottai range, the conditions were better.

Stating that special staff have been deputed to fill 13 water troughs in the four ranges, he said they will ensure continuous supply of fresh water to the animals. Areas vulnerable to bush fires have also been identified. Members of a Disaster Management Brigade, forest staff, fire watchers and members of the anti-poaching squad would maintain round-the-clock vigil.

A disaster management centre has been opened and the staff have been equipped with communication equipment.
