Inspector Manjeet Singh of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has been conferred Shaurya Chakra on Republic Day this year for exceptional show of bravery in countering a fidayeen attack at the Consulate General of India in Afghanistan last May.
In the early hours of May 23 last, a group of armed fidayeens launched an attack at the Consulate General of India, Herat (Afghanistan), with rocket-propelled grenades followed by a heavy burst fire from automatic weapons.
“Inspector Manjeet Singh, commander of the ITBP security arrangement at the Indian Consulate, quickly escorted the Consulate General and civilian staff to the ‘strong room’ and ensured their safety,” said an official, adding that under his command, ITBP commandos killed one of the terrorists.
Four ITBP commandos – Vedpal Malik, Rakesh Kumar, Praveen Kumar and Jadeja Rajender Singh – have been awarded the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry.
