A special mass contact programme was held at Ottankadu village in Peravurani Panchayat Union in Thanjavur district on Wednesday following the adoption of the village by Lok Sabha Member representing Thanjavur K. Parasuraman in which hundreds of residents submitted petitions seeking a range of benefits from infrastructure development to improved banking facilities.

District Collector N. Subbaiyan led a team of officials in accepting the petitions from the villagers and directed the department heads to go into the merits of the petitions to decide on their delivery in a time-bound manner so that the petitioners would get an idea of the state of their request. Stating that from among more than 300 panchayats in the district, the MP has chosen Ottankadu panchayat for adoption under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana, Dr. Subbaiyan promised that every effort would be made to transform the adopted panchayat into a model village.

Dr. Subbaiyan called upon the public to participate in improving the facilities in the village even as the governmental agencies would spur the development works in the panchayat.

He said several serial activities would be carried out after the preliminary assessment of the needs and requirements of the villagers. Special mass contact programmes would be held on the eleventh of every month at the village to review the progress of the schemes and to receive petitions from the people for newer considerations, the Collector said.

In particular, Dr. Subbaiyan stressed public hygiene, sanitation, compulsory child education, opening of bank accounts in every family, enrolment of villagers under various welfare boards, women’s development among other things as priority areas for action in the adopted panchayat.

Apart from Mr. Parasuraman, Project Director, District Rural Development Agency, Srinivasan, Senior Regional Manager, Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, Mohammed Basha, Joint Director of Agriculture, J. Sekar, Pattukkottai RDO Aranganathan, and Panchayat president Sudha Rasu participated.
