Police bring back kidnapped boy, arrest neighbour

The accused was remanded to judicial custody by a local court on Wednesday.

The Chandigarh Police have rescued four-year-old Ajay and arrested the neighbour who kidnapped him from near his residence in Kishangarh on Monday evening. The boy was reunited with his family on Wednesday.

According to police, the accused — identified as Suresh — was an alcoholic and had been unemployed for the last few months. He allegedly kidnapped his neighbour’s son hoping to extract some money from the boy’s father, who is a labourer.

He was caught from the Ambala railway station on Tuesday night.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (East) Parvinder Singh said, “After taking the child away, Suresh was thinking of making a ransom call. He called some of his friends to know the situation in Kishangarh. They told him that he had been identified as the kidnapper and that police was searching for him.”

After Ajay went missing, his mother Gyanwanti had named Suresh in the police complaint. Also, some children had seen Suresh taking Ajay away.

The ASP said that Suresh was traced and arrested with help from one of his friends. Through him, the police convinced Suresh to bring the child back.

He was arrested the moment he reached the Ambala railway station.

Manimjara SHO Inspector Jasbir Singh said Suresh took the child to places across Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. These included Panipat, Meerut, Bareilly and Pratapgarh.

Police said that the neighbours told them that Suresh, who belongs to Bareilly, had been acting odd ever since his paramour left him a few months back. He had reportedly attempted to hang himself once, but the neighbours had intervened.

The accused was remanded to judicial custody by a local court on Wednesday.
