Out campaigning in Delhi for the first time this election season, Union minister Smriti Irani on Wednesday made no mention of BJP’s new face in Delhi and spoke at length of PM Narendra Modi’s “rags to riches” story. Kiran Bedi’s announcement as BJP’s chief ministerial candidate last week was meant to take the pre-poll spotlight away from Modi and give Delhi BJP a strong local leader to counter Arvind Kejriwal.

Irani spoke to a sparse crowd of 250 people in Rohini’s Sector 16, part of Northwest Delhi’s Rithala constituency where BJP’s Kulwant Rana has won the last two Assembly elections.

“A boy was born to a poor family. Yet, he grew up to become the chief minister of a state and the prime minster of our nation. He represents the dream your children dream. And can there be a man humbler than the one who, on becoming the PM, said he was not your pradhan mantri but your pradhan sevak?” Irani said.

She said Delhi has wise voters who want a majority BJP government. “Dilli sirf dilwalon ki nahin hai… it’s a city of thinking people who want a majority government for its development.”

Irani also took jibes at the Congress and AAP saying, “Congress is using a new ploy to win votes… trying to make a backdoor entry into Delhi politics. What they could not do with ‘hand’ (Congress symbol), they wish to do with the broom (AAP symbol).”

Festive offer

Irani played up BJP flagship programmes like Beti Bachao, Beti Padao Yojana. She also brought up the Jan Dhan Yojana, through which, she claimed, 12 crore bank accounts have been opened and Rs 10,000 crore deposited since the BJP had come to power.
