Hirwai awards students for promoting greenery
Nagpur: The Hirwai Green Finger and Green School Competition 2014-15 awards were given away to 55 students from as many schools on Wednesday. Around 750 children had participated in various activities like sowing vegetable seeds on school premises, nursery development etc under the competition which commenced on August 1 last year.
The students not only developed a kitchen garden but also documented the whole process of planting and growing trees at various stages.
Not just CBSE schools, even government and municipal corporation-run schools had participated in the event.
In category I, Siddhi Sawlane of School of Scholars was declared winner. Viraaj Bhambhwani of Jain International School was the runner-up and students of MPK Wardha bagged third place. In the second category for primary school, Rida Sheikh and Shatavari Bhumkar of Modern School were declared winners. Students of CPS and NK Academy bagged second and third prize respectively.
In the third category, Epsita Khan and Arsheya Kalmegh from Centre Point School, Dabha, were declared winners. Bhawan’s BP students were second and third prize winners.
The winners of category four i.e. tree census was won by Gaurav Sharma, Amisha Kelkar, Divya Bhargava and Richa Mohta. The awards were given away by Dr Sharad Nimbalkar who also guided the students about their role in protecting nature.
Area manager L&T Subhjit Dutta, avid tree and jungle lover Nishikant Jadhav, and project coordinator, Raman Science Centre and Planetarium VN Joshi lauded the efforts of Hirwai for starting the event which aims at creating awareness about the environment and making schoolchildren proactive towards the green cause.
The concept was well-received and the response from all the schools was encouraging. Started with 25 schools, Hirwai has reached out to more than 2,500 students right from Montessori to higher secondary classes from around 100 schools.
