Lively Levenshulme – Fred's Ale House and gallery opens, supper club treats at trove

THERE’S a lot to whet the appetite in Levenshulme, aside from its acclaimed Saturday market reopens on March 7. Fred's Ale House, Coffee Bar and Art Gallery launches on Friday, January 30, while the same night just down Stockport Road the innovative chef duo from Season’s Eating starts its supper club takeover of Trove Cafe.

Fred's at 843 Stockport Road is the latest venture from the Hennigan family’s Levenshulme Pub Company. It is based in a former bookie’s that back in the 1930s was a UCP tripe shop. During refurbishment builders uncovered the original Art Nouveau tiles, which now form part of the entrance of this three-storey bar, which boasts its own art gallery, coffee lounge, first floor sun terrace balcony and beer garden. Expect regularly changing exhibitions and cask ales (pictured below, Lawrence Hennigan relaxing at the bar). Opening exhibitions include a retrospective show called ‘Levenshulme Cobbles’ by the former Levenshulme artist Vicki Walker. It also features an exhibition entitled ‘Levenshulme Life’ by Jo Lowes and the Levenshulme Photography group.

Trove Cafe and Bakery (at 1032) is a delightful, casual dining spot at the best of times, but it gains a new dimension with the Season’s Eatings residency on the evenings of January 30 and February 5 (for ticket availability contact @seasoneatmcr).

Previous events have proved hugely popular combining SE’s small plates – expect the likes of Scallops, Hazelnut Pomegranate or Jerusalem Artichoke Ice Cream – with Trove’s baked goods and bring your own wine.
