Screen sirens: Fashion hits and misses from the SAG Awards
Hollywood's A-list were all out as the awards seasons continues in hit-and-miss fashion. Rowena Walsh on the style at the Screen Actor Guild awards
There was a rainbow of colours on display at Sunday's Screen Actor Guild Awards as Hollywood's A-listers went all out to impress on the last major red-carpet outing ahead of next month's Oscar ceremony. And it seems that some stars really do believe that less is more when it comes to standing out from the crowd.
Perhaps it's all down to the influence of Jennifer Lopez who showed off (almost) all her assets at the Golden Globes a couple of weeks ago, but plunging necklines were certainly on display, and from some very unexpected quarters. Jennifer Aniston's usual safe wardrobe choices are a dim and distant memory, thanks to her bold John Galliano gown.
But she wasn't the only forty-something to show off her cleavage. The message was loud and clear: if you've got 'em, flaunt 'em.
SUITS THEM: TUXEDO TREND
The eternally stylish tuxedo was the inspiration behind Emma Stone and Julia Roberts' winning SAG Awards looks, writes Bibby Sowray
We admit it; we have a soft spot for both Emma Stone and Julia Roberts. Both beautiful, both Hollywood sweethearts, both courted by the world's biggest designers. What's not to love?
Sunday night's SAG Awards did little to alter our opinion when Stone and Roberts walked onto the red carpet each wearing a twist on the classic tuxedo.
Fresh from sporting that amazing bow-bustled Lanvin jumpsuit at the Golden Globes, Stone, who is currently starring in Birdman alongside Michael Keaton, chose Dior Haute Couture for her latest red-carpet look. A chic tuxedo jacket dress layered over a sheer, sweeping fishtail skirt made her the very contemporary belle of the ball once again.
Roberts meanwhile looked to Givenchy, the fashion house for which she is currently the face. The 47-year-old had seemingly taken a leaf out of Stone's Golden Globes book and opted for a jumpsuit. While it's always risky to go for anything other than a traditional gown (case in point: Celine Dion at the 1999 Oscars), when it's done right it can wipe the floor with even the dreamiest of dresses.
With its tuxedo-style features and long sleeves elegantly balanced out by a plunging neckline, Roberts proved herself on a sartorial par with Stone, 20 years her junior. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why the tuxedo (and Emma Stone and Julia Roberts) will never lose its appeal.
JENNIFER ANISTON
Oh Jen, we know you had to look dowdy for your role in Cake (shame all that effort didn't even get you an Oscar nomination - never mind, Angelina didn't do so well either), we know that you've pulled out all the stops to get your killer body back and we know that you do love a holiday in Cabo San Lucas, so honestly you really didn't have to go to such extremes to demonstrate it.
LUPITA NYONG'O
Talk about a drama queen. Last year, Twelve Years A Slave's Lupita was the breakout star on the red carpet, and she's proved that she's still got what it takes to impress in this bold Eli Saab absract number with its full-skirted silhouette. And she wasn't afraid to wear full-on geek-chic glasses when she presented an award alongside Jared Leto. We are impressed…
CAMILA ALVES
Can you believe this woman is a mother of three? We're positively green with envy. She looks absolutely stunning in this dramatic Donna Karen creation. And she's smart enough to know that with a dress like this, less is more when it comes to accessories, unless you count the walking pair of sharply defined cheekbones (aka husband Matthew McConaughey) who will be escorting her to her seat. A winning combination: we're sure you'll agree…
SOFIA VERGARA
If you're looking for a masterclass in how to look red-hot in these cold, dark nights, then the Modern Family star certainly fits the bill. Her va-va-voom Donna Karan Atelier dress shows off all her curves to best effect - and actually managed to distract us from the massive diamond weighing down her left hand for at least a moment. We're sure that new fiancé Magic Mike actor Joe Manganiello approves.
CLAIRE DANES
Maybe if she'd just left the belt at home, this Marc Jacobs dress might, just might, have worked. But, as accessorised like that, it looks as if the Homeland star was channelling her alter ego, Carrie, on a particularly off-kilter day when she decided what she was going to wear. In case you're in any doubt, this is NOT a good thing.
JOANNE FROGGATT
She may have come to our attention as Anna, the lady's maid, in Downton Abbey, but there's no doubting that Joanne is planning on moving up in the world if this homage to the era of classic Hollywood is anything to go by. Lady Mary certainly wouldn't recognise her right-hand woman in her sophisticated mermaid gown teamed with tumbling blonde waves and just the right amount of bling, but we suspect that she'd like to borrow her outfit.
JULIANNA MARGULIES
Wow, what a stunning colour was our first thought on seeing the star of The Good Wife on show. But apart from that, we're left wondering just what were you thinking, Julianna?!? Are you trying to do an Angelina with that split? Note to self, that was so three years ago and even Angie wouldn't have dared to turn up in such an awkward, unflattering silhouette.
