JALANDHAR: Beant Singh assassin Jagtar Singh Tara was remanded in police custody on Tuesday for five days in a five-year-old case after he was produced before the court. He was produced before the court twice within half an hour following his counsel's complaint that the cops stopped him from meeting Tara.
Tara was produced in the court of judicial magistrate Prabhjot Kaur around 11am for seeking remand in a case of September 28, 2009, in which five persons were arrested under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
However, all the five accused in the case were acquitted around three years ago, Tara's counsel K S Hundal told TOI.
After Tara was produced in the court for the first time, police did not allow Hundal to meet him even as SAD(A) had engaged him as the counsel. Hundal also had an argument with Adampur ASP Viveksheel Soni as the latter cited security reasons for quickly taking away Tara to safe custody. However, Hundal argued in the court that police acted illegally by not allowing him to meet his client even in the court and police could not interfere in the working of the court.
After the arguments, the court ordered the police to produce Tara again in the court and after hearing the arguments he was sent to police custody for five days.
Meanwhile, SAD(A) activists raised slogans in support of Tara outside the court complex. SAD (Amritsar) youth wing general secretary Ravinder Singh Laddi said their party president S S Mann had told them to arrange all legal help to Tara. The case in which Tara was taken on remand was registered on September 28, 2009 and police had claimed that it had busted a Babbar Khalsa module.
