Maintenance of hygiene in fishing harbour stressed

An awareness programme on hygiene maintenance of fishing harbour and landing centres was organised by the Department of Fish Processing Technology, Fisheries College and Research Institute (FCRI), here on Tuesday.

According to a statement, P. Velayutham, Professor and Head, demonstrated the importance of nutritive value of fish, spoilage of fish, microbial contamination and public health significance of bacteria. A. Surrendraraj, Assistant Professor, spoke on the need for hygiene maintenance of fishing harbour, ways and means of improving hygiene in fish landing centres, sanitation, personal hygiene, disinfection and handling of fish from boat.

B. Sundaramoorthy, Professor, Department of Fishing Technology and Fisheries Engineering, highlighted export value of seafood, and said it was essential for fishermen to hygienically handle fishes on decks of vessels. He also explained the cleaning procedure, chlorination level and other dos and don’ts at fish landing centres. G. Sugumar, Dean (in-charge), FCRI, gave away participant certificates to fishermen.
