January 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - Udupi:

Kagodu Thimappa, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, said on Tuesday that the principles of non-violence, renunciation, truth and justice propounded by Jainism were essential to establish a society based on social, economic and political equality in the country.

He was speaking at a public function, held as part of the mahamastakabhisheka festival, on the Pattanashetti Grounds at Karkala in Udupi district.

Mr. Thimappa said that Mahatma Gandhi had taken the guidance of the principles of Jainism during India’s freedom struggle. Though there were diversities in religion, castes and languages, the country remained united because of its unique culture, he said. D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Union Law Minister, said that steps needed to taken to check terrorist incidents so that there was peace in the world.

Jainism had given the message of peace to the world. The act of renunciation should be voluntary. It was necessary to follow ideals than merely preaching them. People were losing their peace of mind due to the fast paced life, Mr. Gowda said.

Chinmaya Sagar Muni Maharaj, Pawanakirti Muni Maharaj, Prasangasagar Muni Maharaj, Nijananda Sagar Muni Maharaj, Lalitakirti Bhattaraka Pattacharya Swami of Jain Math and others were present.
