THANE: A special programme was organized by the district administration on the occasion of ‘National Voters Day’ to urge young voters to cast their votes and also question their elected representatives when they fail to deliver. Renowned Marathi actor Santosh Juvekar was one of the guests invited who urged voters to exhort their rights to vote.
District deputy election officer Madhavi Sardeshmukh, said in the past five years a total of 12 lakh voters have been added to the total voters population and the district election department catered to around 75 lakh voters.
In the recent times, the voter awareness has improved, but what is required is that they should be questioning the elected people about their progress, Juvekar said. The other guest, producer-actor-director Ashok Samel, asked the citizens not to take elections lightly and elect the right representatives.
On this occasion, students from Thane College, NKT College and Sahakar Vidhya Prasarak Mandal presented street play on elections, voter enrollments and importance of voting. Social activist, Vilas Joshi, who is connected with several polls since last 40 years came down heavily on the election commission and wanted it to review the prevailing system.
He said, despite the number of voters have increased the staff in the election department is the same. There is no permanent staff for the department as a result tremendous load passes on the other departments.
He also said that there are several names still present in the rolls which needs to be removed, but the election commission is not bothered. The list keeps swelling, as a result of which, despite higher voters turnout the percentage remains low all the time.
