LUCKNOW: For the first time since his election, Samajawadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav will visit his parliamentary constituency Azamgarh on February 6. As per the programme, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav will accompany Mulayam.
The duo is slated to address a rally in Azamgarh apart from laying foundation stones and unveiling of projects. “They are slated to visit Azamgarh on February 6. The date has been finalised and the itinerary for the day has yet to be given final touches,” said Rajendra Chaudhary, SP spokesperson for the state unit and senior minister in Akhikesh cabinet.
The party has appointed transport minister Durga Prasad Yadav to look after party events in Azamgarh. Though Mulayam has failed to visit Azamgarh even once since he won the seat at a time the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept parliament elections held in May 2014.
Party's choice of Durga Prasad Yadav in place of Balram Yadav has once again added weight to reports that the party that Mulayam could have lost the seat had some last minute adjustments not been made and Shivpal Yadav compelled to stay put in Azamgarh for a week before the polling.
In order to make his maiden visit worth while Mulayam has been in constant touch with the people of Azamgarh. Sources said this was one reason why the state government transferred the inspector general of police Zone, deputy IG Range and senior superintendent of police (SSP) Azamgarh in the massive police reshuffle in the police department late Tuesday night.
Reports say Chief Minister's Office has already cleared most of the detailed project report (DPR) of projects and scheme worth an estimated Rs 5500 crores which the CM is slated to dedicate to the people of Azamgarh on his February 6 visit. Sources said the Akhilesh government had already sanctioned Rs 429 crore for Sathiaon sugar mill in Azamgarh, while the airstrip at Maduri village in Azamgarh is being upgraded.
Apart from this, a sports stadium, sports academy and a dairy centre are proposed at Tamauli village. The 2014 general election was the first time Mulayam contested from Azamgarh constituency.
