City celebrates Republic Day with patriotic fervour

Patriotic fervour and gaiety marked the Republic Day celebrations across the district. At the Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association, president S.P. Jeyapragasam hoisted the national flag and addressed the members. The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry celebrated the occasion with a flag hoisting ceremony by president N. Jegatheesan.

Celebrations were held at Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre where Ramesh Ardhanari, Medical Director, hoisted the Tricolour and lyricist Snegan, who was the chief guest, delivered the Republic Day address.

At the Sathguru Sangeetha Samajam, Principal Latha Varma unfurled the flag and the faculty and students rendered patriotic songs.

Senior president S. Pazhanikumarasamy of Victoria Edward Hall hoisted the national flag on its premises and honorary secretary I. Ismail garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion.

State general secretary of Tamil Nadu Janata Dal (Secular) hoisted the national flag near Vilakkuthoon in the city in the presence of president of the party’s urban unit on the occasion.

Celebrations in colleges

Students and faculty of Madurai Kamaraj University college celebrated Republic Day where Principal S. Irulappan, hoisted the flag on the premises. Following a cultural programme, sweets were distributed to all participants.

At Saraswathi Narayanan College, Principal M. Kannan hoisted the flag.

In M.S.S. Wakf Board College, Principal S. Abdul Raheem hoisted the national flag.

Cultural programmes by the students marked the Republic Day celebration in Madurai Sivakasi Nadar’s Pioneer Meenakshi Women’s College, Poovanthi, on Monday. College Director K.V. Rajamani hoisted the national flag.

At The American College, Principal Davamani Christober highlighted the significance of January 26 as a day to commemorate the sovereignty and secularism of the country after hoisting the national flag.

Schools join in

Crown Matriculation Higher Secondary School celebrated Republic Day with a flag hoisting ceremony by school president Janab Haji Sheik Dawood.

At Setupathi Boys’ Higher Secondary School, the flag was hoisted by K. Gopalakrishnan, Headmaster of M.C. Higher Secondary School. Uniforms were distributed to five students by M. Ramesh, an alumnus of the school.
