Sri Lankan refugee held on rape charge

A 25-year-old Sri Lankan refugee was arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a 64-year-old Dalit woman in Kanyakumari on Sunday.

According to police, M. Karan alias Jayant of the refugee camp in Perumalpuram raped the elderly woman of Narikulam Colony in Kottaram near Kanyakumari on Sunday afternoon in a secluded place while she was rearing goats.

The woman was given first aid at a private hospital in Kottaram and later shifted to the Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital on Sunday night.

Police have registered a case under sections 376 (rape), 294 B (using abusive language), 506 (1) (criminal intimidation), an 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.

The arrested person was remanded in judicial custody after being produced at a Magistrate Court, police sources said. — Staff Reporter
