The State government has taken steps to get State-level All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) for Tamil Nadu, said C. Vijaya Baskar, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, here on Sunday.
Speaking at the 86th inaugural meeting of Indian Medical Association, Tiruchi branch, the Minister said the Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda has promised to do the needful. Soon, Tamil Nadu would get an AIIMS-like facility.
The Minister said that Tamil Nadu had allocated Rs. 150 crore for establishing a super speciality hospital at Thanjavur Medical College and Rs. 15 crore for establishing a regional cancer centre at Thanjavur. The State government issued orders for both the initiatives.
Tamil Nadu had been credited by the Union Health Minister and by World Health Organisation as a well-performing State with respect to all aspects of health.
Tamil Nadu was in the forefront in preventing and controlling both communicable and non-communicable diseases.
Dengue eradication had been taken on a large scale and there is a crackdown on quacks.
In the implementation of Chief Minister’s comprehensive medical insurance scheme, the State is leading with covering maximum number of diseases.
