MHOW: Ace shooter Naib Subedar Jitu Rai of Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) will be honoured with the prestigious Sena Medal on the occasion of Republic Day in New Delhi on Monday.
Rai has won 58 national and international medals in shooting and brought laurels to the country in both 25 metre and 50 metre pistol shooting events. In 2014, he had won six international medals.
In the 17th Asian Games held at Incheon, the ace shooter won gold medal in 50 meter free pistol event by scoring 186.2 points and became the fifth ranking shooter in the world.
He was also part of the Indian team, which clinched bronze in the 10 metre air pistol event at the sports event.
Just few weeks before Incheon Asian Games, Jitu bagged gold in 50m pistol event at Glassgow Commonwealth Games with a new CWG record. The same year, Jitu won a gold and two silver medals at the ISSF World Cup in Munich and Maribor, which was preceded by silver medal at 51{+s}{+t} ISSF World Championship at Granada.
27-year-old Rai, who was recruited in 11th battalion of the Gorkha regiment, is a native of Nepal and has proved to be a shooter par excellence. Despite having less professional shooting experience, he has excelled in the field in very less time. Shooting experts believe that he'll be the next Olympic medalist in shooting for the country.
Elated on Rai's achievement, Infantry School commandant Lt Gen Gurdeep Singh said that the ace shooter will get many more awards and medals. AMU commanding officer Col Lalit Sharma and the whole army shooting team congratulated Rai on his achievement. Celebrations filled the air at AMU.
It was a proud moment for AMU as unit's Col Sharma was also awarded with Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) commendation card recently.
