Will use tech to fight crime: CoP
MADURAI: Shailesh Kumar Yadav, the new city commissioner of police (CoP), took charge on Sunday and assured residents that he would make use of technology to prevent crimes. He assumed office after Apurva Varma, principal secretary to state government, issued transfer orders on Saturday. Speaking to ToI, Shailesh Kumar, a 1993 batch IPS officer, said he wanted to put technology to its fullest use in controlling crime incidents in the city.
“When technology is available, why can’t we tap it? In Trichy, we had crime prevention cell using the social media. We require infrastructure and systems to implement the same here. Let me check the system available here first,” he said.
He added that a centralized monitoring facility which was connected to CCTV cameras in important areas would be established and constant monitoring ensured. Although he is serving for the first time in Madurai, Shailesh Kumar already has some knowledge on the region and its nature. He has worked in the southern regions in various positions as superintendent of police, deputy commissioner and deputy inspector general of police.
“Madurai is a historical place in Tamil Nadu, just like Thanjavur and Trichy. A large number of people from north India and even foreign countries come here,” he said, adding that utmost importance would be given to security and law and order. “I have already worked in the capitals of Chera and Chola kingdoms, and I am happy to work in Madurai, the capital of Pandya kingdom,” he said.
